How to write a book?

Write something. Anything. The hardest part is starting, so I find it helps if you have a scene you want to include and you start by writing that.

Alternatively I've had a particular character I was interested in and I just wrote a random scene with him. It put words together and made the whole process real, making it much easier to flesh out the rest of the story

The approach one would use depends on the genre of the books. Here's how I would write a novel.

Start with a brief outline of the story.

What is the story about? What are the characters goals? What motivates them to seek whatever it is they want? This is the foundation of a good book.

Next step is to flesh out this outline a little. Split up your story into three sections: the beginning, middle and the ending. In each section, list down the main events you expect to drive the story forward.

Next start drafting your story. And keep going until you finish. You'll find out soon enough that the outline you created will be very helpful in this step.

Starting is definitely the hardest part of writing a book. But because you said you already have a character in mind, try to revolve your story around it. Discover why that character has that characteristics, what are its backgrounds, where is it from, and etc.,. Work on what you already have and find your way through it.
